The warm water pool and spas will be closed from Wednesday 3 June to Wednesday 17 June. Additionally, the outdoor pool opening hours are extended to 6am - 9pm in June.

Our pools are available for lap swimming, aqua aerobics classesswimming lessons and warm water low impact exercise. All aquatic areas are patrolled by qualified lifeguards.

Swimming is fantastic for all-round health and fitness and activity for the whole family. Cool off on a hot day, join in our aqua aerobics, host a children's party, or just enjoy the fitness benefits of regular swimming.

Warm water exercise pool

Our indoor warm water exercise pool is heated to 34 degrees. Perfect for rehabilitation, recovery sessions, gentle water exercise, gentle exercise classes, swimming lessons and general use. It features an industry-leading access hoist to gently transport a person into the pool.

Indoor pool

Our 25 metre heated indoor lap and recreation pool is available year-round for lap swimming, aqua aerobics, swimming lessons and aqua play. Enjoy the health benefits of swimming in all seasons at Ashburton Pool and Recreation Centre.

Toddler pool

Our heated indoor toddler pool is suitable for young children and toddler play all year round. Have fun and build your child's confidence around the water.

Outdoor pool

Our 25 metre outdoor pool is available seven days a week.

The outdoor pool is closed between 12pm – 4pm during the months of June, July and August. The pool opens all day again starting from September.

    The YMCA, on behalf of Boroondara City Council (Council), welcomes you to the Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities. This facility is managed by YMCA and owned by Council.

    At the Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities community comes first. We believe in building community connections and are proud to contribute to creating a vibrant and inclusive Boroondara.

    To guarantee a safe and enjoyable experience for all, please take a moment to familiarise yourself with the below Conditions of Entry.

    These conditions apply to the following sites operated by YMCA Victoria:

    • Ashburton Pool and Aquatic Centre (8 Warner Avenue, Ashburton)
    • Boroondara Sports Complex (271c Belmore Road, Balwyn North)
    • Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre (1 Grace Street, Hawthorn)
    • Kew Recreation Centre (383 High Street, Kew) - currently closed for redevelopment

    ENTERING THE FACILITY

    By entering the Facility, you must, at all times, comply with:

    • All posted signs displayed on the premises and follow all reasonable requests made or directions given by staff of either the YMCA or the Boroondara Council (Council) including in the event of an emergency. The specific conditions of entry applicable to different areas within the facility, including dress-code and attire standards.

    To the fullest extent permitted by law, YMCA and Council retain the right to deny you entry to the Facility, require you to leave, or cancel/suspend your membership, for any reason, including but not limited to:

    • Bringing or attempting to bring, an animal on the premises, except where it is a guide or assistance/service animal.
    • Bringing, or attempting to bring, prohibited items on the premises, including alcohol, drugs, weapons, glass, and other objects reasonably capable of causing harm.
    • Being, or appearing to be, under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
    • Engaging in, or attempting to engage in, any of the prohibited behaviours outlined below:

    PROHIBITED BEHAVIOUR

    • Smoking, or using electronic cigarettes (including vapes).
    • Using offensive language or engaging in offensive behaviour.
    • Displaying offensive images, symbols or text, including tattoos and clothing.
    • Disrespecting other patrons or staff.
    • Interfering with the enjoyment of the premises by other patrons.
    • Endangering or causing injury to patrons and staff.
    • Obstructing or hindering YMCA or Council staff from performing their duties.
    • Causing damage to the premises or any property.

    CHILDREN AND SUPERVISION

    • Children under 10 years must be actively supervised at all times by a person over 16 years of age.
    • Children under 5 years must be accompanied in the water and within arm's reach at all times.
    • Children between 5 and 9 years must be visible and accessible by a parent, guardian or carer at all times.
    • Groups will not be admitted where the number of parents, guardians, or carers supervising children under 5 years exceeds the ratio 1:2.
    • Groups will not be admitted where the number of parents, guardians, or carers supervising children between 5 to 9 years exceeds the ratio 1:4

    PERSONAL PROPERTY

    • Your personal property must not be left unattended, except in a secured locker.
    • Boroondara Leisure and Aquatic Facilities will not take responsibility for stolen, lost or damaged goods.

    PHOTOGRAPHY AND PRIVACY

    • You must not use a camera, video-camera or other audio or visual recording devices without the prior consent of either YMCA or Council staff.
    • Failure to comply may result in immediate removal from the Centre and referral to authorities if necessary.

    CCTV

    • Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras are in operation throughout the facility.
    • Prior consent from YMCA or Council staff is required for any private services to be performed within the facility.

    AQUATIC AREA

    • Follow our Watch Around Water Policy at all times.
    • Always follow the instructions of the Lifeguard.
    • No running, diving (outside of designated areas), or rough play.
    • Infants/toddlers must wear aqua nappies – standard nappies are not permitted.
    • Showers must be taken before entering pools / spas / sauna.
    • Entry is at your own risk.
    • Do not enter the pool if you have had diarrhea or gastro in the last 14 days
    • No glass containers in the pool area.
    • Appropriate swimwear only (no street clothing, denim, or underwear).
    • Motionless Breath Holding activities are not permitted.

    SPA

    • You must be over 18 to enter
    • Please ensure you are wearing a wristband / membership band
    • Appropriate swimwear only (no street clothing, denim, or underwear).
    • Time limits of 15 minutes are recommended for safety

    SAUNA

    • You must be over 18 to enter
    • Please ensure you are wearing a wristband / membership band
    • Patrons must remain seated and sit on a towel at all times. Exercise is not permitted in the sauna.
    • No pool equipment is permitted in the sauna
    • No lying down in the sauna
    • Keep hydrated whilst using the sauna
    • No personal grooming allowed in the sauna
    • Time limits of 15 minutes are recommended for safety
    • This is a dry sauna. Pouring liquid on the element will cause damage
    • No lotions or oils are permitted in the sauna
    • No electronic devices are permitted in the sauna
    • Pregnant women and those with serious health conditions are advised not to use the sauna
    • Inform the lifeguards if you are feeling unwell, dizzy or nauseous
    • Appropriate swimwear only (no street clothing, denim, or underwear).

    WATERSLIDES / AQUA PLAY AREAS / SPLASH PARKS

    • Height, weight and age restrictions may apply.
    • No running
    • Ride one at a time.
    • Ride feet first, no running starts.
    • Do not turn, dive, sit up, stand, kneel, rotate or stop on the slide.
    • Clear the exit when at the bottom of the slide. Do not attempt to re-enter the slide exit area or climb up the slide.
    • Suitable swimwear required.
    • No zippers/ buckles/ jewellery/ sharp objects that will scratch or mark the slide.
    • Ride may not be suitable for persons who:
      • Are pregnant
      • Have heart conditions
      • Have pre-existing medical conditions
      • Have leg or back injuries or conditions


    DIVING TOWERS AND SPRINGBOARDS
    • Only one (1) person is allowed on the platform/springboard at any one time.
    • Pushing and flips are not permitted, unless under instruction of a qualified dive coach and with the prior approval of centre management.
    • Lifeguard instructions must be followed at all times.
    • No running is permitted on the platform/springboard.
    • Jump out in front at all times.
    • All patrons must wait for lifeguard signal before jumping.
    • No other swimmers are to be in the vicinity of the dive pool when the platform/springboards are operating.
    • Patrons requiring floatation aids are not permitted to jump and parent/guardians are not permitted to wait in the water for children.
    • A maximum of two bounces from a springboard is allowed.
    • Children under 5 years of age are not permitted to use the platform or springboards.

    GYM & GROUP FITNESS

    • Towels must be used on equipment or machines must be wiped down after use.
    • Return weights and equipment after use.
    • Youth aged 12–17 can enter with BLAF membership (no casual use or Fitness Passport Youth members) once completed a youth Wealth and Wellness Plan.
    • Appropriate exercise attire must be worn at all times.
    • Grip socks must be worn when attending Reformer Pilates classes.
    • Closed footwear must be worn at all times.

    GYMNASTICS

    • Only registered participants and staff may enter the gymnastics floor area.
    • Parents/guardians must remain within designated viewing zones.
    • Jewellery must be removed before participation.
    • Participants must follow coach instruction at all times.
    • Participants must not wear shoes on the gymnastics floor.
    • Long hair must be tied back.
    • No food or drink (except water) in gymnastics hall.
    • No glass containers in the gymnastics hall.

    Annual Gymnastics Registration Fee

    An annual registration fee applies at the time of enrolment and each calendar year thereafter. For online enrolments, this fee will be added to your account after sign-up and charged with your first direct debit payment. The current fee amount is listed below, which may be reviewed annually.

    This fee covers YMCA Victoria administration costs as well as registration with Gymnastics Victoria and Gymnastics Australia.

    • Recreation and Competition Gymnastics: $80.00
    • Pre-School Gymnastics: $65.00

    SKATE PARKS

    • Skateboarding, Inline Skating, Bicycle riding and Scooter riding are inherently dangerous activities. Users enter and use the skate park at their own risk. The use of safety gear such as, wearing a helmet, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads is highly recommended. Free use of safety equipment is available during the staffed hours of operation.
    • Animals, glass items, radio-controlled vehicles, scooters with electric bicycles and unauthorised vehicles are not permitted on the skate park surface.
    • To ensure the safety of all users and looking out for each other can help minimise injuries and ensure everyone has a good time, please consider the following:
    • Be aware of others in the park and how they are using it.
    • Do not block obstacles and take turns when it is busy
    • Follow direction of traffic, don’t ride against traffic and watch out for blind sports.
    • Always give way to people community up the ramps and allow plenty of space
    • Regularly check your equipment to ensure its safe.

    When is the best time to use the skate park?

    Picking the best time can help you get the most out of your visit. The YMCA encourages younger people and beginners to visit earlier in the day, when the skate park is quieter, as it can get busier during the afternoon and night sessions. Speak to YMCA staff if you need help navigating the skate park.


    STADIUM / SPORTS HALL

    • No food or drink (except water) on court surfaces.
    • No glass containers in the stadium.
    • Suitable clothing must be worn
    • Correct footwear must be worn – non-marking soles required.
    • No hanging from the rings
    • Spectators must remain off the playing surface.
    • Play fair. No rough play or abusive language.
    • Respect the referee/umpire. Without them there would be no game. Accept their decisions and play fair.
    • Do not use equipment unless booked or authorised.
    • No photography allowed without prior approval. Permission must be obtained from Centre Management prior to taking any photos.
    • Please place all bags/belongings court-side to avoid accidents. We recommend the use of lockers to keep your belongings safe.

    PROGRAMS AND MEMBERSHIPS

    If you are a member or enrolled into our programs you are bound by program-specific or membership terms upon enrolment which is located via your online account under agreements.

    Missed Gymnastics Lessons and Make-Ups

    • No gymnastics lessons are conducted on public holidays. If your class falls on a Public Holiday this fee will be removed from the associated DD (i.e half debit).
    • Direct Debit customers are entitled to unlimited make-up lessons to be used within 90 days (excluding gymnastics competition pathway).
    • Make-up lessons can be booked up to 6 days in advance.
    • Make-up lessons are subject to availability and can be booked via your online account through the client portal.
    • Make-up lessons cannot be cancelled and rebooked.
    • Term-paying members are not charged for public holidays and therefore are not eligible for make-up lessons.

    Parental Involvement in Infant Swimming Classes

    • For children under three or those enrolled in infant classes (Starfish, Periwinkle, Minnow), a parent or guardian must be in the water for the duration of the lesson.

    LIABILITY

    • You will be held responsible for any damage caused to the premises or any property on the premises by yourself or any accompanying children.
    • The YMCA and the Council do not accept liability for any injury or death of any person at the premises for any loss or damage to personal property on the premises, to the extent permitted by law.
    • If any of these Conditions of Entry, or part thereof, are held to be illegal, invalid, void or unenforceable, that condition is severable, without affecting the validity or enforceability of the remaining part of that Condition or the other Conditions.

    WARNING: If you participate in these activities your rights to sue the supplier under the Australian Consumer Law and Fair Trading Act 2012 if you are killed or injured because these activities were not supplied with due care and skill or were not reasonably fit for their purpose, are excluded, restricted or modified in the way set out in or on this sign.

    NOTE: The change to your rights, as set out in or on this sign, does not apply if your death or injury is due to gross negligence on the supplier’s part. “Gross negligence”, in relation to an act or omission, means doing the act or committing to doing an act with reckless disregard, with or without consciousness, for the consequences of the act or omission. See regulation 5 of the Australian Consumer Law and Fair Trading Regulations 2012 and section 22(3)(b) of the Australian Consumer Law and Fair Trading Act 2012.

    YMCA Victoria is a Watch Around Water endorsed aquatic safety organisation. Watch Around Water is a set of industry guidelines that outline the minimum supervision requirements of young children at aquatic venues.

    We have followed the Watch Around Policy (outlined below) in our centre since 1 September 2019.

    Children under five years old

    • All children must be accompanied into the centre by a person over the age of 17 and be supervised within arms’ reach at all times in the water.
    • All children must wear a pink wristband supplied by YMCA staff to help identify their age while swimming.
    • Children will not be admitted without a full fee paying parent/guardian who must also be in the water at all times.
    • Groups will not be admitted entry where the number of parents/guardians supervising a group of children under five years exceeds the ratio of 1:2.

    Children under 10 years old

    • All children under the age of 10 must be accompanied into the centre by a person over the age of 17.
    • All children must be actively supervised by an adult over the age of 18 at all times. The adult must have a clear and active view of the child with no physical or structural barriers between them (this includes tech and devices
    • such as mobile phones).
    • All children must wear a yellow wristband supplied by YMCA staff to help identify their age while swimming.
    • Groups will not be admitted entry where the number of parents/guardians supervising a group of children under 10 years exceeds the ratio of 1:4.

    Birthday parties

    • All children under the age of 10 must be accompanied into the centre by a person over the age of 17 and handed over to the supervision of the birthday party leader (staff member).
    • All birthday party participants must wear a blue wristband and an age-based wristband (pink or yellow) to identify their participation in a party.
    • The adult guardian of the birthday party child must remain accessible and actively supervise the group at all times.
    • At the conclusion of the birthday party, children will remain in the supervision of the birthday party leader and supervising parent until physically handed over to their supervising parent/guardian.
