Frequently asked questions

  • What are the benefits of swimming lessons?

    There are many benefits to learning how to swim:

    • develop and refine their swimming strokes;
    • learn essential water safety,
    • personal survival and open water techniques;
    • understand how to cooperate with and respect others in the water;
    • be able to make sensible decisions and solve problems in and around water;
    • develop their physical health and wellbeing;
    • build their water confidence;
    • challenge themselves to build endurance and strength for the sport of swimming.
  • What should I bring to swimming lessons?

    What should I bring to swimming lessons?

    • Swimwear for your child
    • Towel
    • Goggles (highly recommended, but not essential)
    • Swimming cap (optional)
    • Swim nappies (standard nappies are not permitted in the pool)
    • Warm, dry clothes for after class

    Swim nappies

    Infants are required to wear aqua nappies that are tight fitting around the thighs if they wear a standard nappy when not swimming. Standard nappies are not permitted in the pool as they fall apart in the water. Don't worry if you don't have any or forget to pack them – you can buy them in centre.

    Goggles

    Goggles are not a compulsory part of our program, however we highly recommend children gain experience both with and without goggles.

    They may appear insignificant but they can make a large difference to a child’s learning journey as they progress through swimming lessons. Most children who do not wear goggles close their eyes as they swim. This can lead to them becoming disorientated or preoccupied which makes them unable to focus on their stroke technique. We offer a great range of affordable youth goggles. Just ask Customer Service for assistance.

  • When should babies start swimming lessons?

    Babies must be at least six months old to start swimming lessons and our infant and toddler programs are ideal for children up to the age of three years.

    Introducing your child to the water from a young age helps them to become strong, safe swimmers with a lifelong love of the water.

  • How long will it take for my child to learn to swim?

    Every child progresses at a different rate. There is no one answer and we strongly encourage parents to not make comparisons with other children. Some children will progress quickly, others will take considerably longer. Variables that can influence learning include (but not limited to) overcoming a fear, natural aptitude and the amount of practice that occurs outside lessons.

    Progression occurs within a level. Not reaching the next swim level does not indicate a lack of skill acquisition. Children improve within levels. It is also important for them to learn a skill rather than perform it once before they move to another class.

  • Are swimming lessons accessible?
    Yes. If a group setting is not an appropriate learning environment for your child, we can develop swimming lessons on request to cater for children with varied needs. This may be in a small group setting or a 1:1 class, depending on the needs of the child.
